Healthy Adults Needed for a Space Medicine Study

international-space-station

The Space Medicine Innovations Lab is seeking participants for a study on the effects of microgravity on vision. Astronauts are returning from space with significant vision changes; this NASA funded investigation aims to evaluate technology that may be flown to the Inter-national Space Station to measure astronaut visual changes.
Participants will visit the lab up to 2hrs a week for six weeks. The first visit includes a visual and cardiovascular health screening, as well as training to use handheld devices that non-invasively measure the eye’s ability to focus. For the remaining five sessions, participants eyes will be dilated with drops and vision measurements will be made in two postures, seated and prone (lying face down) with pressure applied to the lower body.

Participants will be compensated for their time. This study and posting are IRB approved.

SIGN UP FOR DARTMOUTH’S WORKPLACE CSA (COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE) PROGRAM!

Eating healthy, eating local, & supporting local farms is easy thanks to Dartmouth’s Workplace CSA program! 3 farms will be delivering CSA shares full of fresh produce to locations across campus. Don’t forget to sign up for your favorite farm or the one delivering closest to where you park!

Delivering to:

Life Sciences: Luna Bleu http://lunableufarm.org/our-csa/
Fairchild: Sweetland http://www.sweetlandfarmvt.com/csa/join/
Tuck/Thayer: Root 5 http://www.root5farm.com/csa.html

More info on Root5 Farm:

Root 5 Farm is located in Fairlee, Vermont. They deliver fresh, organic produce throughout the Upper Valley from May thru December.

Root5 Farm grows over 150 varieties of vegetables. CSA members receive a weekly box filled with a diverse selection of freshly harvested organic vegetables, herbs, and some specialty items like melons, ginger, dry beans, and sauerkraut.

Weekly boxes will be filled with 8-10 seasonal items. A share is designed to feed 2-4 people with a mixed diet, or 1-2 vegetarians by providing all of their vegetable needs for one week. The shares are often most abundant during the heavy harvest months of August, September, and October.

For more information, check out their beautiful website here!

More info on Sweetland: a message from Sweetland owner, Norah Lake D’06

Hello and happy spring from Sweetland Farm in Norwich!

Outdoors the weather is bouncing back and forth in true March fashion, but across the river and inside Sweetland’s greenhouses it’s truly beginning to feel like spring.

As we anticipate the upcoming growing season, we’re ready to open signups for our 2017 vegetable CSA!We’re excited to begin our 6th season of growing great produce and delivering CSA shares to the Dartmouth community. We hope you’ll join us for a summer of good food and farm fun!

Sweetland offers half- and full-sized CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares, delivered Tuesday afternoons right to Dartmouth’s Fairchild Tower for convenient faculty, staff, and student pickup. Our CSA runs from mid-May through mid-October, offering 22 weeks of produce at an average weekly price of just $18 or $27, depending on share size. Our goal is to save you 30% on produce, compared to market prices. In addition to a diverse weekly box packed with the freshest produce, our shareholders also have free access to our plentiful pick-your-own flower, herb and vegetable gardens just 7 miles from campus, and are invited to visit the farm for seasonal events and self-guided tours. You can read more about our share options and become a shareholder on our website. For planning purposes it’s helpful if you sign up by late March, and we do offer a split payment option, so don’t delay!

More detailed information about the CSA is on our website http://www.sweetlandfarmvt.com/, photos from last season are on Facebook and Instagram, and we always like to hear from you with questions or ideas!

Cheers

Norah Lake ’06 ENVS

Tiltfactor Game Research Lab – Open House

Tiltfactor Open House
Wednesday Nov. 9
4:30pm – 6:30pm
Room 246, Black Family Visual Arts Center

Free and Open to the Public

Dartmouth’s game design and research lab invites the community to visit our space and play awesome games and apps made at Tiltfactor this Wednesday at 4:30 PM.

Demos include:

  • r-kive, a personal mobile app created in partnership with the National Archives. r-kive allows people to search and label personal photos on their phones. Occasionally, in between tagging their own images, users are asked to tag an image from the United States’ National Archives. These tags are sent back to the National Archives database and entered immediately in order to make those images searchable by the public and further enhance the National Archives database. r-kive helps people organize their own photos as well as contribute to our nation’s records.
  • Crowded Dungeon, an adventure game that explores players’ roles in the creation of video games. In the game, the hero attempts to sweet talk, cajole, and threaten various monsters to let her escape the dungeon in which she is trapped. Players can take on the role of either the hero trying to convince the monsters to let her pass, or the monsters themselves.
  • and other game prototypes from the Tiltfactor team!

If you need even more incentive, we’re going to trot out our HTC Vive virtual reality headset and let people play games on that. There will be food refreshments catered by Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine.
